From November 7-27, students in Grades 4-6 higher level English classes, led by Richard Keeling, Catherine Stafford and Ken Fortunah, participated in the Scholastic Book Club 21 Day Reading Challenge. Each student was given a reading journal and instructed to read each day, then write something about the section of the book they read, including any new vocabulary words they learned, their favorite part of the story and their opinion. As an option, students could also draw a picture of what they had read.
According to Scholastic China, the reading challenge was geared to “inspire students to read more, explore their imagination through reading, strengthen reading comprehension and create an environment where they can freely read and express”.

The higher level English teachers started the Scholastic Book Club at Beijing New Talent Academy in 2015 when they wanted to promote English reading to the students in their classes. Since receiving the first order of books in term 1 of 2015, teachers have seen more students participating in reading English books for the sake of enjoyment and pleasure. Additionally, each of the teachers has been able to add newer books to their classroom bookshelves with bonus points awarded from the Club. Students enjoy looking through the Scholastic catalogues and can order books, if they choose, every two months.
